What is Search Engine Optimisation?

By Phillip Ohren of Seo My Site

SEO is short for "search engine optimisation" or "search engine optimiser." Deciding to hire an SEO is a tough decision that could potentially improve your website and save time & money. Make sure to research the potential advantages as well as the damage that an irresponsible SEO can do to your site. Many SEO consultants and other agencies and consultants provide useful services for website owners

How does SEO affect my website?

A website that has been optimised well for search engines will recieve more organic traffic. The higher volume of traffic, the greater the chance of your website receiving leads & enquiries. It is important that your website makes the most of organic traffic because organic results are the most clicked when users are looking at search results. Below, see how Google ranks results when the term "Darth Vader" is searched.

How can the use of good SEO benefit my business?

Search engines can often ignore or rank poorly what you may think are good websites. There are many techniques and special effects that designers use to make web pages look exciting, vibrant and professional. In fact these elements can have a negative affect on your page rank and could result "Spiders" & "Crawlers” just passing your site.

If your website implements any of the above then you may be missing out on potential leads or traffic due to a poor design or bad SEO practices. Most business owners believe that if the buy an expensive website they will automatically get found by their target customers! This is wrong! Your website won't even be found by Google unless the proper channels have been implemented.

One of the red flags I look for in a SEO company is if they know how to spell Optimization.

I then look to see if their own website places on the first page of Google for Search Engine Optimization or SEO Company.

I want to know if a company practices what they preach.

One of the companies I have been impressed with is NationalPositions.com which places number 2 for SEO Company and number one for SEO Companies.

The reasoning here is they are competing with other SEO companies trying to place for the same search term.
